Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist, sees Sunday's race as a form of redemption. Injury forced him to withdraw in 2005 and 2008 while two years ago he suffered such a deep cut to his foot which forced him to drop out after about 16 miles.
Now after a successful cross country season, his first since 2003, and recovery from minor knee and calf injuries, he feels ready for atonement. That would mean taking a big chunk from his personal best of 2:09:53 for second place in New York five years ago:
"I definitely want to be with the guys who are going for 2:07:30. Last year I considered retiring but I feel I haven't reached my potential in the marathon."
The Boston Marathon on Monday also offered inspiration in the shape of third place finishes for compatriots Ryan Hall and Kara Goucher. Though they have different coaches, Meb has been training almost daily with Hall, sharing long runs and speedwork sessions.
