The Government will consider increasing the cash award to Asbel Kiprop if the International Olympics Committee (IOC) confirms his elevation to a gold medallist.
Kiprop, who won men’s 1,500m silver at the Beijing event is set to be promoted to the top medal after Bahraini athlete, Rashid Ramzi, who sprinted away to victory, tested positive for a new generation blood-booster. Kiprop stands to receive an additional Sh800,000 if the Government and other companies who partnered with it to reward gold medallists from Beijing top-up his cash to commensurate his new status as an Olympic champion.
"Asbel is a talented young athlete who deserves to be at the top. When his elevation is confirmed, the Government will consider rewarding him like all other gold medallist from Beijing.
"His elevation to a gold medal will not only be victory for Asbel but also for the entire nation because our medal tally will increase and it would only be fair to recognise him as such," Commissioner for Sport, Gordon Oluoch, told FeverPitch.
He added: "He didn’t merit to lose in the manner he did and we wish him well."
