How overtraining evolves into a curse

Our senior men at the annual world cross country championship have not won the individual gold medal since Paul Tergat retired into running marathons. Just before the team left for Amman, Jordan, for this year’s event the media informed us that a reliable witchdoctor wanted to assure us that the wait was finally over.

The national coach, one Kirwa, confirmed this too, bragging he had settled for the best, who he had conditioned so at a Mt Kenya base for weeks. They were virtually unbeatable, he said. “Bring on the world,” he chest thumped.

Thankfully Kenenisa Bekele, the diminutive Ethiopian who has been a tormentor of our runners, had generously decided to sit out of this year’s championships because he too should have been aware that it was our turn to win.
