DULUTH, Minnesota -- In what has become the 13th largest marathon in the United States, the 33rd edition of Grandma’s Marathon gets underway Saturday in this port city perched on the edge of Lake Superior.
The surroundings on the course are delightful, from the inspiration drawn from the iconic white caps off Lake Superior, all set against a breathtaking background of purple and blue lupine, that frames a near perfect running environment. The terrain is flat and fast.
What started in 1977 as a 150-person road race along the scenic north shore has grown annually by epic proportions. More than 17,000 runners will take part in what is now a weekend of racing that includes the marathon itself, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, and a Friday night 5K.
