Mardi Gras Marathon goes Rock 'n' Roll

The Mardi Gras Marathon has gone rock 'n' roll, a move organizers say could triple participation in the 45-year-old race.

New Orleans is the 11th city to join the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series featuring local bands at every mile along the course, The Competitor Group and the New Orleans Track Club announced Tuesday.

The Crescent City is a perfect match for the popular format, which also includes themed water stations, cheerleaders and a post-race concert, said Peter Englehart, president and CEO of The Competitor Group.

"It's got the history of music, it's quite a destination tourism locale, it's a great place to market nationally -- people who come in and run for a long weekend have got a lot of other things to do," he said.
