Windhoek — The 2009 edition of Namibia' premier road racing series, the Victory Race, was officially launched in the capital this week. As an added bonus, Old Mutual, the series' sole sponsor, will this year give an opportunity to both the female and male category overall winner to take part in the Two Oceans Race in Cape town, South Africa, next year (see picture of this year's race).
The other new addition to the prices this year is that the two overall winners will be entered into a professional development programme administered by the Frank Fredrick Foundation.
Old Mutual is continuing its commitment of sponsoring the series and will give a total of N$299,808 this year. At the launch, Sakaria Nghikembua, CEO of Operations at Old Mutual, stated that his company is committed to giving young underprivileged athletes opportunities to grow in the sport and a chance to showcase their talent.
"The objective of the Old Mutual Victory Race Series is to provide underprivileged young athletes with an opportunity to receive professional training and plenty of running and sponsorship opportunities to showcase their talent at national or international levels," said Nghikembua.
The victory race series is a set of three regional road-running races. These races are scheduled to take place in Oshakati (27 June), Swakopmund (18 July), and the final Race in Windhoek. The date for the final has been moved back to 8 August from the original 19 September because it clashes with other sports events.
