San Francisco Half Marathon
The 2nd Half Marathon covers the second half of The San Francisco Marathon course which started in the Golden Gate Park and finished near the Ferry Building. The course is USATF certified.
There was a turnout of over 21,000 entrants participating in the marathon and two accompanying half marathon races, plus a 5K event. They anticipated ideal conditions, however when I flew into San Fran two days before the race, I couldn’t believe the temperature change from warm Boulder to chilly San Fran. I got settled into my lovely Hotel in the city center – where I hit a restaurant for a nice dinner then early night.
The day before I did my usual - easy 30min jog with drills and stretches then to registration and check out the course – mainly on the map. I couldn’t quite understand part of the map but thought I would figure it out on the day (which for sure I did). Nice relaxing afternoon with a movie and good food. I was feeling good and confident about the next day’s race and how my training has been going in general.
Race morning was an early start, as I was running the second half of the marathon which the race organizer said was the elite race, so we had to catch a bus out to the start line. As it was pretty chilly a good warm up was needed and maintained until our 8.15am race start. It crossed my mind how many Marathon runners were still heading past our start and we were going to have to merge and pass! My main aim was to stay as close to Tera Moody as possible as I knew she was the strongest runner in our group and I could possibly PB.
After the first couple of miles I still had Tera in my sights until randomly the officials decided to put a barrier up and send a group of us on a detour, looping us back onto the course again – Wow! I didn’t know what was going on I was very confused but carried on trying not letting it bother me too much. From then on they did this to me and groups of people for another 3 times and by this stage I had totally lost Tera, but the girl behind had amazingly caught me again. So we all basically ran a different course at times – I am not sure the reasoning behind this, but good practice at not getting rattled!
The good news I still finished 2nd. I was of the impression that the 2nd half marathon would be relatively flat, however it was surprisingly hilly – still I felt particularly strong on the climbs and descents. I enjoyed the race and happy to get a solid training day in my buildup to Worlds.
