Ailis McSweeney (Leevale AC) won her first national title when won the 100m by the narrowest of margins. Her winning time of 12.20 placed her ahead of Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC) in 12.21, wih her clubmate Niamh Whelan third in 12.31.
The junior men’s 3,000m title went to Tomas Cotter (Dunleer AC) in 8:39.85.
Jason Smyth (City of Derry) was a clear winner of the men’s 100m in 10.78 into a headwind of 2.9m/s.
Deirdre Ryan (DSD AC) won the high jump with a clearance of 1.83m.
With a lap to go in the women’s 1,500m Deirdre Byrne (Sli Cualann AC) was just ahead of Kelly McNeice (Lisburn AC) and Roisin McGettigan (Sli Cualann AC). The order remained the same into the home straight when Byrne stretched out to win an excellent race in 4:25.41.
They didn’t go any real pace for the first half of the men’s 1,500m until Mark Kenneally (Clonliffe Harriers) took over the lead with two laps remaining. He managed to stretch out the field but did not manage to shake off too many.
On the last lap it was David Campbell who raced into the lead with 250m remaining and he was not going to be denied and he won in 3:51.96. Behind it was Kenneally who won the race for second in 3:54.05, with Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC) third in 3:54.10.
Alistair Cragg (Clonliffe Harriers) made light work of winning the 5,000m in 13:52. The real battle was for second with Sean Connolly (Tallaght AC) edging away from Mark Christie (Mullingar AC) in the dying stages of the race for the silver medal.
Marian Andrews (Togher AC) won the 400m in 55.02.
The Careys dominated the 400m hurdles with Michelle (Dublin Striders) winning the women’s race in 57.82 and Tom Carey (City of Derry AC) winning the men’s in 52.28.
Brian Gregan (Tallaght AC) caught Brian Murphy (UCC AC) at the halfway mark of the 400m and then pulled right away to win impressively in 46.44.
There was a new PB for David Donegan (Clonliffe Harriers) who won the pole vault with 4.91m.
