Irish men’s team win Matterhorn race

The Irish men’s team won the Matterhorn mountain race in Zermatt today. The race was won by Eritrean Michael Mehari in 59:50 which was nine seconds ahead of Swiss runner Stephan Wenk. Columbian Juan Pablo Rangel was third and Brian MacMahon (Clonliffe) in fourth around one minute behind the winner. Next was Adam Osborne (Leeds City) who was third in the British World Championships trial last weekend.

Mark Ryan (Rathfarnham) was 9th, Barry Minnock (Rathfarnham) 14th and Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham) 16th. They combined for a team victory six minutes ahead of Switzerland and a further five minutes ahead of Columbia. Michael Freeley (Rathfarnham) in his debut mountain race was 24th. For the Irish runners this was the end of a two weeks training stint in the Alps.
