Rene top of the class again over 10km
A fast race in chilly weather conditions saw Rene Kalmer notch her fourth successive Spar Women's Challenge win when she romped home in a speedy 34min41 to win the Pretoria leg of the series at the LC de Villiers rag farm in Pretoria on Saturday.
The schoolteacher got her sums right again as she has now won every 10km challenge race in 2009, capturing the Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban titles as well as the Pretoria race.
Kalmer also walked away with R50 000 prize money as this latest victory put her top of the log in the Grand Prix standings.
Kalmer, who has been dominating the circuit for some years, said she was delighted with her success.
"It was a nice race and I really enjoyed it. It's a new route and it's more user-friendly than the old route, which makes it faster," said Kalmer. "There were a few twists and turns and speed bumps, but they just made it more interesting.
"It's a bit different running a race in the afternoon. It's not like you get up and run. You have your breakfast and then you have to plan everything very carefully, and make sure you have a snack before you run so that you have some fuel in the tank."
Kalmer said she and the University of Johannesburg's Phalula twins, Lebo and Lebogang, ran together for the first 4km.
"Then I got ahead of them and kept the lead for the rest of the race."
