Sore hip delays Rupp but treatment seems to be working

by Doug Binder, The Oregonian - Galen Rupp will leave for Europe on Wednesday with his coach, Alberto Salazar.

Rupp had intended on leaving July 26 but stayed home to receive treatment for some inflammation he experienced about three weeks ago in his right hip.

Rupp traveled to Stanford for treatment and underwent more in Portland and Salazar said the pain subsided and has been absent for several days. Rupp initially noticed the pain in his hip after running a 20-mile workout on soft wood chip trails at Tualatin Hills Recreation District.

He plans to go through a rigorous workout on Tuesday before he departs for altitude camp in St. Moritz, Switzerland with a group of other Oregon-based Nike runners. Rupp isn't scheduled to race until the 10,000 meters final at the IAAF World Championship on Aug. 17 in Berlin.

Rupp has also agreed to a shoe contract with Nike and has started drawing a paycheck. Details have not been disclosed.
