Race Results Weekly reports
NEW YORK (10-Sep) -- Half of the 1500m medalists from the recent IAAF World Championships will be race down Fifth Avenue here on Sept. 26, when the New York Road Runners holds the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile for the 29th time.
Leading the charge on the men's side will be Bernard Lagat, the 1500m/5000m double world champion from 2007 who earned bronze and silver medals in those disciplines at this year's championships. Lagat, 34, of Tucson, Ariz., will be making his second appearance on Fifth Avenue after narrowing losing last year's contest to New Zealander, Nick Willis, who is unable to defend his title because of a recent surgery.
The women's medalists are Britain's Lisa Dobriskey, 24, who won the 1500m silver medal, and San Francisco's Shannon Rowbury, also 24, who nabbed the bronze. The pair finished 1-2 on Fifth Avenue last year.
"Speed will rule and stars will shine on Fifth Avenue on September 26,” said New York Road Runners' president and CEO, Mary Wittenberg, who directs the race. "We look forward to the stars of the summer battling for the right to run the final victory lap on the streets of New York."
The three world championships medalists only represent the tip of the iceberg of athletic talent coming here for the Fifth Avenue race. The combined fields have 15 Olympians. Within the 22-man field there are 19 sub-four minute milers --ten of whom have broken 3:55-- and 16 athletes who have run sub-3:40 for 1500m. The women's field of 16 runners has eight women who have broken 4:30 for the mile (six with sub-4:06 for 1500m).
Other key men include USA 1500m champion Lopez Lomong, USA 5000m champion Matt Tegenkamp, Europe's fastest miler from 2008 Andy Baddeley of Great Britain, Canadian Olympian Nate Brannen, American Olympian Leonel Manzano, USA Indoor 3000m champion David Torrence, and USA 5000m runner-up Chris Solinsky. Other top women include American Olympian Erin Donohue, 2008 NCAA mile champion Hannah England of Great Britain, and 2009 Reebok & Stockholm Grand Prix 1500m champion Christan Wurth-Thomas.
