Team Strands: Hartmann 6th, Dryer 7th at the USA 20 km Championships

Team Strands athletes Jason Hartmann and Elva Dryer placed 6th and 7th in their respective races at the USA 20 km Championships in New Haven. The Stratton-Faxon New Haven Road Race hosted the men’s and women’s championship races.

Hartmann earned his sixth place finish with a personal best 59:52, while teammate Patrick Tarpy ran a debut 1:01:10 for 14th place. Top finishes were hard-earned in race that included one of the fastest championship fields ever assembled for the 20 km, including three of the six fastest times ever run by an American.

Brett Gotcher of Flagstaff won the men’s championship in 58:57 with a late surge and strong finish, narrowly beating Mo Trafeh (Flagstaff, Ariz.) by four seconds, and Jason Lehmkuhle (Minneapolis, Minn.) by and additional three seconds at 59 minutes, 4 seconds. Gotcher tied Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi for the third fastest time run by an American in the 20 km.

Dryer, who owns the sixth fastest time run by an American woman in the 20 km (1:07:18) added yet another top-ten USA Championship finish to her career tally with a 1:10:09 seventh-place finish.

Colleen De Reuck (Boulder, Colo.) won the women’s title for the second time in 1:07:21. De Reuck led most of the race after overtaking Serena Burla (Baldwin, Miss.) and Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, Calif.) near the five-mile mark, and, at 45, became the oldest woman to win a major USA Championship with her 17-second victory.
