Anthony Famiglietti, the defending men's titleist, is returning to the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K in Providence, Rhode Island, which serves as the USA 5K Championships for elite runners. Matt Tegenkamp is the 2009 USA 5000-meter champion on the track and recently broke the 13:00 barrier in the event with a 12:58.56. Amy Yoder Begley is the 2009 USA 10,000-meter champ and was sixth in the World Championships.
“This is the strongest 5K elite field we have ever had,” said Race Director Charlie Breagy, race director of the CVS Caremark Downtown 5K, who believes that with Famiglietti and Tegenkamp "we have the potential to see a new American record." Breagy added, “We’re also expecting strong local interest in the women’s race given that Providence residents Molly Huddle - winner of two recent American road championship distances - and Ireland’s Mary Cullen will also compete for the women’s title.” The men's race will also include Brian Olinger, Bolota Asmerom, Ian Burrell, Jon Riley, and Ben Bruce; the women's ranks features Renee Metivier-Baillie, Sara Hall, and Katie McGregor.
Advance race registration for individuals and teams (ending on September 15 at noon Eastern Time), as well as course map and complete event information can be accessed at www.cvsdowntown5k.com. (photo of Amy Yoder Begley by Victah Sailer)
