Kampala — TWENTY long distance athletes have camped in Iten, Kenya for high altitude training ahead of the this year's MTN Kampala Marathon.
Led by last year's women race winner Jane Suuto and national half marathon record holder Nicholas Kiprono, the athletes left for the Kenyan highland to step up training even before the official launch of the event.
The 6th annual MTN Kampala Marathon is set for November 22. Already, the athletics body UAF technical team is working on the course. IAAF course measurer Faustin Kiwa is drawing a new half marathon route. Police asked the organisers to change the route from that used last year to suit the security of the participants.
"We are finalising with the ground work before the marathon is launched. We are targeting over 15,000 runners this year," said MTN promotions and marketing manager Aggrey Kagonyera.
Last year's event attracted 11,500 runners whose financial proceeds went to the Red Cross Mama Bag project in the war ravaged northern Uganda.
