Reversed roles for Olympic champs Jelimo and Bungei
By JAMES MINUDI
Sunday’s Safaricom Kisumu Marathon had its sideshows with Olympic 800 metres champions Wilfred Bungei and Pamela Jelimo the main attractions besides the race’s winners.
The pair were the chief guests at the annual race won by Eliud Kiptanui from Eldoret and Kawaha Garrison’s Jane Nyambura, but rather than brush shoulders with the rest of the VIPs, Jelimo and Bungei were out on the course handing out water to the runners who battled the sweltering Kisumu heat.
Kiptanui won in two hours, 12 minutes and 17 seconds and was followed by Vincent Onchonke from Kisii who clocked in 2.19:04.
Kisumu’s Ezekiel Odhiambo finished third after he checked in with 2.19:40.
Nyambura’s winning time was 2.42:19 and she was followed by Rose Kerobo from Nyamira who checked in with 2.43:26.
Leah Kusar from Kapenguria took the third place in 2.50:19 while Eunice Jelegat from Kapsabet was fourth in 2.50:31.
The race was flagged off from Awasi Trading Centre by Athletics Kenya secretary David Okeyo.
It ended at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground.
