Belfast City Marathon: Church warning over Sunday marathon
Running the Belfast City Marathon on a Sunday could alienate many Christians, the Presbyterian moderator has warned.
Around 40 churches lie close to the race route and worshippers would face added congestion, Dr Stafford Carson said.
Thousands of people, including many fun runners and relay competitors, enjoyed near perfect conditions for marathon running on Monday, with the weather dry but cool.
However, marathon organisers are considering switching from May Day to the Sunday before because they believe some traders and runners would prefer the day.
Mr Carson said: "While appreciating that there are other factors affecting their decision, I would ask Belfast City Council to consider very carefully the concerns of a large section of the community which they represent before taking a decision that would, for many people, diminish this special event."
A total of 3,300 runners entered the main race which began at the City Hall at 9am and finished at Ormeau Park. They were joined by 11,000 relay runners, 2,350 walkers and 1,500 fun runners in various events. Traders including publicans and small shop owners did a brisk trade as the event and entertainment also attracted many spectators.
Mr Carson added: "The city marathon is a great event for Belfast and its citizens, the runners and particularly the many charities that benefit. However, by running the event on a Sunday, I am concerned that many churchgoers and Christians will no longer be able to give the event their full support."
Event organiser Danny O'Connor said marathons were run around the world on Sundays with the support of churches.
"We don't have to stick with the current route, we don't have to start at 9am, we will be looking at all of those things. We would look to talk to the churches involved and we will take it from there."
A decision on shifting a date will have to be taken within weeks as enrolment for next year's event starts soon.
