This past weekend was the annual independence day tradition known as the peach tree road race in Hotlanta, GA. I was expecting horrid conditions but pleasantly surprised with relatively mild temps and humidity that only gave me mild swamp ass. Over all a pleasant and lovely weekend. Tracy Russell (race director) and John Curtain (athlete coordinator) once again did a great job of making the athletes feel at home with southern hospitality. I met up with some old friends from Reebok at the exposition and met some new ones from the love/hate. A Mr. Matthew Booth (the local south east NB rep) and I had a great chat and a few laughs the day before the race.
The race itself was nothing to write home about. I was the 5th american which was a marked improvement over the USA champs in Des Moines and Im getting fitter and fitter every week. The gun went off and I found myself looking for answers instead of the task at hand. I was happy with the 2nd half of the race however. Andrew Carlson and I literally ran step for step the entire 10k after standing next to him on the starting line. I just need a serious gut check and man up in the next few competitions.
After Peach tree, Ive been taking it relatively light just running mileage until today where I did 3x15 min with 1 min rest. A standard Brad Hudson workout which I did consistently for years under his tutelage. I had the help of Foon Fu (A track and field fanatical) who rode the bike with me. Its a good thing because the energy levels were at a bare minimum this morning and I needed the extra motivation. Up next is the bix 7 in Davenport, Iowa. This time around Im hoping to fly rather than sit in the back seat of a Saturn for 9 hours....
