Ten nations and 200 athletes participated the first Vertical Kilometer® World Championship – a gruelling 1,000m ascent with an average 50% incline over 2.1 kilometres from Alba di Canazei (1,465m) to the summit of the Crepa Neigra (2,465m).
The new Vertical Kilometer® world record – 33’16” was set by Italian Urban Zemmer, beating his own record set on the same course last year. Second and third were team mates Nicola Golinelli in 34’29” and Manfred Reichegger in 34’42” respectively.
Spaniard Agusti Roc was fourth followed by New Zealander Jonathan Wyatt, six times World Mountain Running Champion.
In the women’s field, a skyrunning new-comer but standing ski-mountaineering world champion, Letitia Roux, took the gold for France in 40’16”. Local runner Antonella Confortola, standing European Vertical Kilometer champion and Olympic cross country skiing champion took the silver in 41’16” while Britain’s Angela Mudge, back in Europe after a year’s sabbatical in South America and past skyrunning world champion, took the bronze in 42’47”. New Zealand’s Anna Frost was fourth.
Look out for the SkyMarathon® World Championship next week in Premana, Italy on Sunday, July 25 where the world’s top athletes, including standing world champion Kilian Jornet, will battle for the SkyMarathon® world title.
