The anniversary of the ABN AMRO Singelloop Utrecht Sunday was the best gift that the sixtieth edition could wish. The Kenyan Leonard Komon Maliebaan improved the world record in the ten kilometers to 26.44. That was seventeen count faster than last year's Micah Kogo Parelloop Brunssum.
Komon Singelloop also won last year (when in 27.10) and was faster than his best time on the job (26.57,08, two years ago in Hengelo). He is best known as field runner with world championship silver medals (2008 and 2006 as a junior) and fourth several places (the last two editions in 2007 as a junior).
Sammy Kitwara, also from Kenya, finished second in 27.11 in Utrecht. Joost van den Ende 30.22 was the best Dutchman in thirteenth place, four counts (two seats) Colin Cups.
Boonstra third
The Moroccan Rkia el Moukim 32.51 was the fastest woman. Miranda Boonstra, which is under preparation at the Amsterdam Marathon next month, gave an excellent performance in the 33.23 third place, the Kenyan Kipsoi (earlier this year winner in the Hague Royal Ten) and the Lithuanian Drazdauskaite (earlier this year five tenths of EK-marathon in Barcelona). That was just above her personal best. Merel de Knegt finished one minute behind her (34.27).

Komon smashes through 27-minute barrier with 26:44 run in Utrecht 10Km
VIA IAAF
Leonard Patrick Komon of Kenya smashed the World record* in the 10Km at the ABN AMRO Singelloop in Utrecht, The Netherlands, today (26).
The 22-year-old clocked a jaw-dropping 26:44 over the 10 kilometre course to knock a massive 17 seconds from the previous mark of 27:01 set by his compatriot Micah Kogo in Brunssum, the Netherlands, on 29 March 2009.
Last year Komon clocked 27:10 in Utrecht to occupy the No. 5 position over the distance all-time and vowed to return this year to challenge not only the World record, but the 27-minute barrier as well.
Fast from the outset, Komon, the 2008 World Cross Country silver medallist, covered the first kilometre in 2:36 and reached the first five kilometres in 13:19 (unofficial).
Kenyan Sammy Kitwara was a distant second, clocking 27:11.
More details to follow as they become available.
