Cebu running champions Mendel Lopez and Madelyn Carter will join more than 23,000 runners in the 34th Milo Marathon eliminations in Cebu this Sunday.

Mendel Lopez and Madelyn Carter, the Milo Marathon 2009 Cebu 21K champs in the men’s and women’s, will have their hands full as they face local challenge in Jen Billacora, Eugene Delfonso and Adonis Singson.

The run, which starts at Osmena Boulevard and ends at the Cebu City Sports Center, is the second biggest leg of the Milo Marathon eliminations following Metro Manila.

Organizers of this year’s Cebu Milo Marathon see an additional 3,000 runners participating in the different race categories, an indication of the growing popularity of the sport in the locality.

A cash prize of P10,000 awaits the fastest male and female 21K runners in the Cebu eliminations, as well as a chance to pocket the grand prize of P300,000 in the Milo Marathon national finals in December 12.

The Cebu run is the sixth of the 18 races slated for the 34th season of the Milo Marathon.

Since July, Milo Marathon race events have been held in city capitals of Manila, Dagupan, Baguio, General Santos and Davao.

The previous races have been topped by seasoned runners Vertik Buenavista, Jho-Ann Banayag, Abraham Missos, Luisa Raterta, as well as a sprinkling of promising young athletes across the region.
