Countdown to the XXVII Florence Marathon on Sunday will start from Viale Michelangelo 28, through the city of Florence in a new, faster and fascinating journey, and after 42 kilometers and 195 meters, will bring more than 10,000 athletes in Piazza Santa Croce in front the statue of Dante Alighieri, whose portrait is engraved on the medal this year.
Yet to finalize the exact count of members, but last Saturday had already been registered 10,211 participants (7,410 Italians and 2,801 foreigners, 8,593 men and 1,618 women) from 57 nations and this is a fact higher than the total membership of 2009.
Among the top male runner of the test will be yet another confrontation against Kenya to Ethiopia via the winner of the previous edition, the Kenyan Ben Chebet Kiprono (PB 2:09 a.m.: 42 - Padova 2009) was joined by compatriot Kenites Kiprotich (PB 2:07 a.m.: 42 - Hamburg 2007). They will, however, deal with the Ethiopians Theshome Gelan (PB 2:07 a.m.: 37 - Houston 2010), ea Merga Ejigu (2:14 a.m. PB: 15) and the 22 year old rookie in marathon Toles Tadese Aredia.
In the women's race is the Italian champion announced in office Marcella Mancini (Team Runner 99) opposed to Ethiopia, winner of the 2010 Rome Marathon, Firehiwot Nut (2:25 a.m. PB: 38), Hungarian Aniko Kalovics (PB 2:26 a.m.: 44 - Carpi, 2006), the Russian Alena Samokhvalova (PB 2:28 a.m.: 47 - Venezia 2009) and twenty Ethiopian Meseret Mengistu (PB 2:34 a.m.: 07 - Rotterdam, 2010).
The record to beat the Florence Marathon are: 2:08 a.m.: 40 for men (James Kutta, KEN, 2006), 2:28 a.m.: 15 for women (Helena Javornik, SLO, 2002). The fastest lap time of the event are Italian 2h11'51 Michele Gamba (1999) and 2:32 a.m.: 18 Tiziana Alagia (2000).
Among the people participating in the Florence Marathon 2010 the mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi and former Formula 1 motor racing driver Alex Zanardi who live for the first time the thrill of driving in his Florentine derby handbike which this year competed in six marathons, including even that of New York. At 9:18 shall be the start of the Florence Marathon and a few minutes before the start of the Marathon participants.
