Uliczka and Herzog take the honours in Tilburg

German steeplechaser Steffen Uliczka and the Netherlands’ Adrienne Herzog won good quality races at the 52th International loket.nl Warandecross in the Dutch city of Tilburg on Sunday.

Uliczka used his speed over shorter distances to good effect when he accelerated over the final 200m of the European Athletics Cross Country Permit Meeting to finish in 29:42.

Second was local runner Khalid Choukoud in 29:47 while third was Belgium’s Atelaw Bekele, the 2009 SPAR European Cross Country Championships under 23 bronze medallist, was third here as well in 29:50.

Moldova’s Iaroslav Muschinschi, the 2009 winner in Tilburg and Europe’s fastest marathon runner this year, finished back in eighth in 30:25.

There was a surprise in the men’s under 23 category, held in conjunction with the senior men’s race, when Germany’s Richard Ringer finished in 29:52 to beat Belgium’s Jeroen D´ Hoedt, the 2009 SPAR European Cross Country Championships junior men’s champion, by three seconds.

Herzog, the 2009 SPAR European Cross Country Championships senior women’s bronze medallist, looks like being in contention for the medals again in two weeks time when she was a convincing winner of the women’s 8.1km race in 27:30.

“This was a good run but the only thing I’m really thinking about is getting back on the podium at the Europeans in two weeks time,” said Herzog.

Second was Belgium’s Veerle Dejaeghere in 27:44 with Ukraine’s Yulia Ruban third in 27:54.

In the short 2 km women’s race Belgium’s Sigrid vanden Bempt won in 5:59 while the first Dutch runner home was Lesley van Miert in second place, three seconds further back.

However, some of the biggest cheers in Tilburg were reserved for local heroine Yvonne Hak, the 2010 European Athletics Championships 800m silver medallist, who had a rare cross country outing and finished third in 6:05.
