InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon no quick fix for Pettit running track

Despite its impressive growth in three years, the InStep Icebreaker Indoor Marathon has not produced a quick fix for the rubberized running track inside the Pettit National Ice Center.

At its conception in 2008, marathon organizers and Pettit officials had promoted the Icebreaker as a way to generate money to replace the track that circles the ice oval. To date, however, none of the money from the event has been set aside to replace the track, which has compacted and deteriorated after nearly 20 years of use.

The track inside the Olympic training center at State Fair Park is a popular alternative for runners in the Milwaukee winter, and several hundred turn laps indoors on Saturdays in preparation for spring racing.
