Local runner numbers a let-down for Dubai Marathon

The President of the UAE Athletics Federation has stated he is unhappy at the number of locals running in the Dubai Marathon.

Ahmad Al Kamali said that although the marathon had received a huge response this year, with over 14,000 people signed up, he was unhappy with the number of local participants.

Al Kamali said: “Emiratis registered for the events stands at just two per cent of the total number registered. We are not happy with this.

“We definitely did push them but they want to come and register at the last minute which cannot be encouraged.”

Kamali said the registration process was stopped three days ago and had to turn away close to 3,000 runners.

He added: “Due to technical issues like safety and security concerns revolving around the event, we cannot accept last-minute registrations.”
