Lisa Koll takes a big step in her development

DesMoinesRegister reports
Lisa Koll spent most of last weekend’s USA Cross Country nationals race looking at the back of Shalane Flanagan.

The four-time NCAA champion from Iowa State wants to be in Flanagan’s shoes — as arguably the premier female distance runner in America — someday, possibly in 2016.

For the past seven months, the Fort Dodge native has witnessed first-hand Flanagan’s preparation and intensity while the two have been teammates at Nike’s Portland camp. Flanagan won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing Olympics and followed that performance with a dominant winning effort at the USA event last Saturday in San Diego.

“I have the best (training) partner in the country. I would be pretty stupid not to take things from her,” Koll, pictured, said in an interview with me Wednesday. “Someday I would love to be in the position she is in. I see how hard she works, and it’s contagious. She’s helped me in the training going from college to a professional. She’s been a huge help.”
