Olympic boost for Marathon

VIA independent.ie

The Dublin Marathon received a huge boost yesterday with the news that the IAAF, the governing body of world athletics, have made the event one of the qualifying races for next year's Olympic Games.

"This is a great recognition for the race and I have no doubt that the IAAF's decision will impact on the field," said race director Jim Aughney.

The qualifying standard for London has yet to be finalised by the IAAF but it's expected to be something in the region of 2 hours, 15 minutes (this year's world championship standard is 2:16).

Last year a record 13,500 runners were attracted to Dublin and Aughney is confident there will be even more competitors in 2011.

The race takes place on the October Bank Holiday Monday.
