No longer rosy

enya’s athletes who thought the Arabian Gulf state of Qatar is still interested in importing talent are in for a rude shock.

The tiny gas-rich state is now less interested in foreign talent. It is developing its own indigenous runners. Seif Saaeed Shaheen did not take part in the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.

Shaheen won world 3,000m steeplechase for the Gulf state in 2003 and 2005 World Championships and added a world record to his silverware. He has not been running much lately, since an injury ruled him out of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Qatari athletics head coach Joachim Krug commented:
