2nd IAU Trail World Cup held in Le Monetier in the French Alps

By Thomas Reiss - After an easy flight from SF to Frankfurt I got picked up by my brother, a quick 1.5 hour drive and we where at my sisters home in Germany. I stayed there for a couple of days before leaving to drive to the French Alps. We left Friday morning at 9AM for the roughly 8 hours of driving. From Germany to Switzerland, through here and into France. Slowly but surely the hillsides turned into real mountains. We arrived at around 5PM in Le Monetier, the village where our hotel and the race start and finish was. We checked out the village a bit and at 6PM met up with my teammates and official team managers of the German National Team. We all checked in with the race organization and then drove to the hotel and checked in. Hotel Le Rif was cute very typical mountain chalet kind a hotel with 19 rooms. Besides us, Team Italy, Team Great Britain and the host nations Team of France stayed at this hotel just a half mile form the start and finish area.

After a short 30 minute jog and breakfast on Saturday morning we went to explore parts of the course. We drove up the famous “Tour de France” mountain climb of the Col de Gallibier to the location of the first aid station. What we saw of the course looked challenging and rugged but not to bad. As I realized in the race what we saw was by far the easiest portion of this extremely hard course.
