Tadese Tola of Ethiopia and Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain cruised to victory in the men's and women's races at the NYC Half Marathon this morning. Both Tola and Radcliffe ran the late stages of the race by themselves, with their competitors nowhere in sight. By the end of the New York City Half Marathon, Tola had built up a lead of over one minute from the second place finisher. Radcliffe passed a number of elite men as she barreled her way to the finish.
Tadese Tola won the NYC Half Marathon in 1:01.06, while Ryan Hall was the first American finisher in third place. Hall said on Twitter after the race: "Happy with todays run. A great start to the fall. Thanks for everyones prayers and support. In case you didn't follow: 3rd in 62:35."
Paula Radcliffe cruised past the finish line of the New York City Half Marathon in 1:09.45. Radcliffe has been recovering from bunion surgery this year, and she was unsure of her fitness leading into the IAAF World Championship marathon next weekend. In today's half marathon, Radcliffe proved that she is ready for a major marathon, so will she run? After the race, Radcliffe told the AP she'll decide on Wednesday whether she will run the championship marathon on Sunday, saying "the foot is fine... it's just blowing the cobwebs away."
Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia finished in second place, followed by Catherine Ndereba of Kenya in third. Deena Kastor, who looked slightly disappointed crossing the finish line, was the first American finisher in fifth place.
