Athletics South Africa: R 478 500 IN PRIZE MONEY AT STAKE IN NEDBANK CAPE TOWN CITY MARATHON

The Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon, one of the country’s prestigious marathons, taking place on Sunday, 27 September 2009, will this year have total prize money of R478 500. The race is expected to be another top class event after the Stellenbosch marathon attracted thousands of local participants, and a quality of elite runners.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) and their partners Nedbank announced that the total prize money of R478 500 will be up for grabs at the Championships event, and this includes team prizes. In addition, cash incentives will also be on offer to South African runners for time related performances.

The marathon race starts in Adderley Street at 6:30 and runs towards the Rondebosch Common, past the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, and around Pinelands, before returning to the City via Salt River and Woodstock.

The last second half of the marathon route takes the runners through the V & A Waterfront and, past the new 2010 stadium and, along the Sea Point Promenade, with unparalleled views of Robben Island. The final stretch of the race brings the runners along Somerset Road, into the city centre, where it ends in front of the City Hall in the shadow of Table Mountain.

Simultaneously with the start of the marathon, a 10km race also starts in Adderley Street, next to where the marathon start, and the route essentially follows the Waterfront and Sea Point loop of the last part of the marathon course. A two-hour cut-off time also allows for most walkers to finish.

The Nedbank Cape Town Marathon is expected to draw top marathon runners from South Africa and neighbouring countries.

The winners in the men’s and women races respectively will take home a cool R60 000 each, while the second and third placed athletes will be rewarded with prizes of R30 000 and R 20 000 respectively.

The closing date for entries is 18 September 2009. To enter online visit www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or log on to www.capetownmarathon.org.za.
