PARIS HALF MARATHON 2009 - Worku wins in Paris

P-J Vazel for the IAAF

The start of the Paris Half Marathon, an IAAF Label Race, took place at 10 AM on Sunday (8) on Chateau de Vincennes Esplanade. No less than 20 000 participants (78% of men and 22% of women) lined up for the 21,097 loop races in the French capital.

The men's race started at a slow pace, the group staying packed into the front wind and it wasn’t until after the 5km was reach (in 15:12) that the favourites emerged. Ethiopians Bazu Worku Hayla and Fikadu Lemma took the control of the race and led six Kenyans to the 10km (29:57).

Worku who ran 13:18.08 for 5000m at age 17 in 2005, attacked after the halfway point was reached. Only team-mate Fikadu Lemma responded, holding onto the pace a few metres back. Worku made a decisive move at the 19km and broke his personal best of 62:51 set in New Delhi last November. His time, 61:56 wasn’t close to the course record set by Kenyan Maregu two years ago (60:26).

Lemma finished in second place four seconds behind and smashed his 63:29 PB set in Saint-Denis in October 2007. Kenya placed seven runners in the top 10 finisher.

Harun Makda was keen to emulate her male countrymen by winning the women’s race. However, Jelena Prokopcuka from Latvia, the two time a winner of prestigious New York Marathon (2005 and 2006) was the favourite.

Makda, accompanied by Kenyan Perninah Arusei, left the group early and maintained a 20sec gap over the experienced Latvian, who was protecting herself from the head wind by sheltering in the pack. Prokopcuka eventually made up the gap and joined the African duo by 10km (33:18).

A few metres back, France’s Yamna Oubouhou and Margaret Maury, paced by a male group of runners, kept the pressure from behind.

The leaders tried various changes of pace during the next 5km and with 15km reached Prokopcuka finally broke away to a clear victory.

The race record (1:09.37 set by Romanian Alina Tecuta 12 years ago) was never under treat but the 32-year-old, whose personal best has stood at 68:11 since 2005, posted a solid time of 70:43, taking in account the weather conditions. Makda, who was making her debut on road, placed second in 70:57, and Arusei third in 71:38.

Paris Semi-Marathon, the most popular event in France for this distance, was a good preparation for both race winners before the 33rd edition of Paris Marathon to be held on 5 April.
