Who's the next US sub-2:10 Marathoner?

Ryan From Flotrack

With major marathons around the corner here in the US (Chicago on Sunday and NYC only 4 weeks away on Nov 7th) we were wondering who the next sub-10 US guy might be. We talked to Fasil Bizuneh (2:16:47) this week who has run a marathon in a couple years but believes it can be him with training going well and winning the US 10-Mile championships a few weeks back. He'll be out in chicago with training partners James Carney (2:15:50) and Nick Arciniaga who surprised many with his 2:11:48. You have to think Brett Gotcher is the first choice after his #4 all-time US debut marathon (see list at bottom) in Houston earlier this year (also part of the McMillan group that includes the three previously mentioned!), but we'll have to wait until Houston in January to see "El Gotcho" go after it again.

When looking at the all-time list for 2:10 and under performances (see below), only 6 Americans have been under 2:09 and only 16 total under 2:10. I say only because there have been 1,254 performances in history under 2:10 (does includes multiple runs by one individual - http://www.alltime-athletics.com/mmaraok.htm). With Ryan Hall pulling out of Chicago we're not going to get excited about an American competing for the win, but there is a chance for someone to get some pub for a solid performance.

Now we ask this question about the next sub-2:10 and in reality you have to assume it will be Dathan (with the potential to go even faster) but whats funny is that he's not the first name that comes to your mind because you want to think he's already been there! Crazy. He's at 2:10:00, but we're pretty confident that will be old news come NYC.

Anyone else that could surprise?
