50th anniversary Zatopek 10: Menjo's record chase

by Scott Gullan

In a major coup for next week's event, Menjo will attempt to snare his countryman Luke Kipkosgei's race record (27min 22.54sec) in the 25-lap race at Olympic Park.

The 31-year-old has been a revelation this year and produced three personal bests and race wins in 11 days in August, including the world's best time of 26min 56.74sec in Finland.

Organisers are hoping Menjo's presence can help the Australian contingent, led by national record holder Collis Birmingham, go under the tough qualifying mark of 27min 40sec for next year's world championships.

The Kenyan's front-running style is sure to excite and his record-breaking performances have come without the aid of pacemakers, which are common in major distance races throughout Europe.

"It was a club race (in Finland), and they said they would bring pacemakers. I said no, I can do it alone," Menjo said about his world-leading time.

"This has been my best season. In Melbourne, I come to win and run fast."

Others to feature in the race include Commonwealth Games runner Ben St Lawrence and 2008 Zatopek runner-up, American Bobby Curtis.
