Reported By Peter Gambaccini

Bernard Lagat will attempt to break Doug Padilla's 1990 U.S. indoor two-mile record of 8:15.02 at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory on February 12. The event is being called the NYRR Deuce Record Challenge. Lagat already owns American indoor records for 1500 meters (3:33.34), one mile (3:49.89), 3,000 meters (7:32.43), and 5,000 meters (13:11.50). He won a record eight Wanamaker Miles at the Millrose Games in New York, including the meet mark of 3:52.87, but lost a bid for a ninth victory on January 28 to World Indoor 1500-meter gold medalist Deresse Mekonnen of Ethiopia. Lagat also holds U.S. outdoor records for 1500 (3:26.34) and 5000 meters (12:54.12). He was the 2010 World Indoor 3000-meter gold medalist. At the 2009 World Championships outdoors, he won a silver in the 5000 and a bronze in the 1500; in 2007, he was the gold medalist in both events. Lagat was a 2004 Olympic 1500-meter silver medalist and a 2000 bronze medalist. Lagat, originally from Kenya, is a graduate of Washington State University. He is now a resident of Tucson, Arizona, and is still coached by his college coach, James Li; recently, he's been doing altitude training in Flagstaff. Lagat and his wife Gladys are parents of son Miika, age five, and daughter Gianna, two.
