Edna Kiplagat of Kenya targets another marathon surprise in her London debut

Five months after her surprising win in New York, Edna Kiplagat is ready to win another major race Sunday at the London Marathon.

The 31-year-old Kenyan will make her debut in the race. Top competitors include Liliya Shobukhova, who won in London and Chicago last year, and Irina Mikitenko, a two-time winner in the British capital.

“I consider myself one of the favorites on Sunday,” the Colorado-based Kiplagat said Wednesday. “The biggest threat is Liliya because she has a lot of experience and I know she is among the best runners here in London.”

Shobukhova became the first Russian woman to win the race and knows she faces a challenge to retain her title.
