Marathon world record holder Haile Gebreselassie set his sights firmly on the London 2012 Olympics after retaining his Great Manchester Run title.
Gebreselassie, a two-times Olympic 10,000m champion, was forced to put up a strong performance in the windy conditions to hold off the spirited challenge from Britain's European 10,000m silver medallist Chris Thompson to win in 28:10s.
Thompson took second, only 11 seconds behind in a run described by the winner as amazing,
Meanwhile, home favourite Helen Clitheroe took the women's race in 31:45, smashing her 10k personal best by thirty seconds in the process.
