FALMOUTH –Tilahun Regassa, 19, and Manitu Daska, 25, both of Ethiopia were the winners of Sunday’s 37th annual CIGNA Falmouth Road Race.
The seven-mile run from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights attracted field of 10,000 runners, including many of the best in the world.
Under warm, sunny skies Regassa won the men’s division in a time of 31 minutes and 41 seconds and Daska won the women’s division in35 minutes and 23 seconds.
Each won $10,000 from a prize package of $90,300, making Falmouth one of the most lucrative non-marathon races on the circuit.
The top U.S. finishers were Meb Keflezighi,34, of Mammoth Lakes, Ca., who came in ffith overall with a time of 32 minutes and 12 seconds and Rebecca Donaghue, 33, Of State College, Pa., who came in with a time of 37 minutes and 14 seconds.
They each won $5,000.
The men's race was a virtual blow-out and the women's race similar. Regassa jumped out from the very start and had a 20-second lead most of the way. By mile 3 he was blowing kisses to the crowd.
