With a sponsorship package, totalling Sh95m for this year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon in place, athletes who will succeed in the chase for a big payday on October 25 can rest assured of taking home their treasure.
In a function to present the event sponsors for one of four Greatest Race on Earth relay marathon races spread over Nairobi, Singapore, Mumbai and Hong Kong yesterday, 11 companies partnered to boost the event’s kitty by Sh34m in addition to the Sh60m pledged by title sponsors Standard Chartered to bring up the total figure. Some of the firms have offered services instead of cash.
Significant return
"Over the years Nairobi Marathon has given sponsors a significant return on their investment and offers excellent prospects for them to take advantage," Athletics Kenya (AK) chair, Isaiah Kiplagat, who was on hand alongside Geoffrey Githinji, the chair of Nairobi Marathon steering committee said. Registration for the event that targets 15,000 participants up from last year’s 12,000 entrants closes on October 18. Winners of the main men and women 42km full marathons at the seventh edition take home Sh1.5m.
Elsewhere, the long-serving AK chairman has taken the step of giving something back to his home community with the inaugural Ndalat Gaa Cross-Country, a unique event where youth and junior runners will take centre stage set on Moi Day (October 10).
The race that be will run in Nandi North is moulded to spread the gospel of international governing body, IAAF’s new initiative, Kids Athletics that targets runners from ages six to 13. Consequently, nine categories targeting primary and secondary school runners competing over distances of 2km to 8km will feature.
