Dar Es Salaam — Jumanne Tluway and Banuelia Brighton are among top local elite athletes who are expected to participate in the 8th edition of the Kilimanjaro Marathon, which takes place in Moshi on February 28.
The race starts early in the morning at the Moshi University College of Cooperative and Business Studies (MUCCoBS) Stadium in Moshi.
Athletics Tanzania (AT), Assistant Secretary General Julius Msomi said today that the Kilimanjaro Marathon 2010 will once again be a showcase of the country's top long-distance talent.
He said some of top Tanzanian marathon super stars like Patrick Nyangero, Jumanne Tluway, Samwel Kwaang and Banuelia Brighton are set to be joined by scores of other top athletes from across the world to race at the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Patrick Nyangero was a second winner of the full marathon last year finishing the race in 2:15:35, Jumanne Tluway won Full Marathon in the men's category in 2008 finishing the race in 02:15:37 - followed by Andrea Silvini (02:16:22).
Samwel Kwaang is a winner of the Kilimanjaro Marathon 21km in 2009 while Banuelia Brighton, a national marathon record holder for women since 2008 when she won the female category taking 02:48:37 before going on to win the Kigali Peace Marathon in May 2009.
Msomi said Mary Naali, who is one of the best Tanzanian female athletes will also take part in the Kili Marathon.
Other top runners expected to participate include Fabiolla William, Mashaka Masumbuko, Mekiadi Bayo, Restituta Joseph, Sarah Maja, Faustine Musa, Samson Ramadhani, Damian Chopa, Ezekiel Ngimba and Sarah Kavina.
Msomi urged road runners from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Manyara, Singida and other parts of the country to come out in their numbers. "We would like to call on every athlete from every region in the country and abroad to come and take part in this world-class event."
He also urged Moshi residents to come out in their droves to support and cheer on the people's race. His words were echoed by George Kavishe, the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Brand Manager, who both thanked and congratulated the organizers for a job well done in making Kilimanjaro Marathon such a big event.
Kavishe said he was confident beyond a shadow of a doubt that this year's Kili marathon would be a world-class event.
Entry fee for local runners has been pegged at 4,000/- for the 42.2km marathon and 3,000/- for the half marathon while for the Vodacom 5km fun run the registration fee is 2,000/-.
Foreign runners will pay USD 60 for full marathon and half marathon and T-shirts, medals and goodie bags will be handed out.
The race is sponsored by Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Vodacom, Tanzania Tourist Board, Tanga Cement, DT Dobie, New Africa Hotel, Goodyear Tyres, TanzaniteOne, KK Security, Keys Hotel, TPC Sugar and Kilimanjaro Water.
