Incentives offered by organisers and sponsors means the winner of the 2010 Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban could win more than R1-million (mzungo edit: 100 797.83 EUR or 126 844 U.S. dollars).
The Comrades Marathon Association is offering R250,000 (mzungo edit: 25 199.45 EUR or 31 711 U.S. dollars), R120,000 (mzungo edit: 12 095.74 EUR or 15 221.28 U.S. dollars) and R90,000 (mzungo edit: 9 071.80 EUR or 11 415.96 U.S. dollars) for the top three positions, as well as R250,000 for a record and R125,000 (mzungo edit: 12 599.72 EUR or 15 855.50 U.S. dollars) to the top South African.
But on top of that, Nedbank Running Club athletes can score big with additional incentives from the club, the bank and Nike.
Nike is offering a R250,000 (mzungo edit: 25 199.45 EUR or 31 711 U.S. dollars) prize for Nedbank Running Club athletes wearing their shoes who finish in the top 10, with an additional R50,000 should they finish first.
A further R250,000 - from the club and the bank - is up for grabs if the winner breaks the Down Run record, which stands at 5hr 20min 49sec for men and 5hr 54min 43sec for women.
