The start and finish line of the five Race Walking and Marathon circuits will be set up on the streets Passeig Picasso and Passatge Mercantil. The Marathon goes through the districts Ciutat Vella, Eixample and Sant Martí. It is a circuit which, for the first time in the history of European Championships, will be carried out entirely in the streets of a city. Athletes will have to run four 10km laps.
The Barcelona 2010 Marathon goes from Passeig Picasso towards Lluís Companys, Ronda Sant Pere, Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, Gran Vía, Marina, Passeig Circunvalació, Passeig Colom back to the starting point. The circuit passes by some of the most important sights of Barcelona, such as the Arc de Triomf, Plaça Catalunya, Casa Batlló, Monumental, the towers of the Port Olímpic, the Columbus Monument and many more.
The circuit will be considerably flat, with only little differences in altitude that go from 6 to 27 metres above sea level. There will be refreshment stations, one set up at kilometres 5, 15, 25 and 35 and the other one at 10, 20, 30 and 40.
