Australian Craig Mottram pipped European 10,000 metres silver medallist Chris Thompson in a sprint finish to the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run.
Thompson lost out by a second to Mottram who clinched victory in their 10-kilometre clash on the streets of Sheffield in 28 minutes and 50 seconds.
The fast finishing pair broke clear of the field after eight kilometres before Mottram pulled away to achieve his narrow victory. Finland's Jussi Utriainen placed third in 29mins 02secs.
Mottram, one of the few athletes ever to defeat Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele, was full of praise for Thompson, who is at his fittest after a career disrupted by injuries in recent years.
Mottram added: "Chris has done well now that he is fully fit and taken his career to a new level particularly with his silver medal in Barcelona.
"He's achieving what everyone expected him to do and it's good news."
The pair will clash again over two miles at the Great North CityGames on Tyneside in a fortnight's time.
Thompson, 29, who will race in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, was delighted with his performance.
"I'm chuffed with how I ran," said the Aldershot athlete.
"I led early on and felt good, but in the end it came to a head-to-head with Craig and he proved stronger - but I've no complaints I ran a good race."
