"We must safeguard the interests of the team selected for national duty and we will not reinstate Komon to the team"

Athletics Kenya (AK) yesterday insisted they won't reinstate world 10km and 15km record holder Leonard Komon back to the world cross country team slated for this month Punta Umbria, Spain.

AK vice chairman Paul Mutwii said the federation has the responsibility to safeguard the national team interests. "We must safeguard the interests of the team selected for national duty and we will not reinstate Komon to the team," added

Mutwii. He said Komon was advised to report to camp and plead his case as far as the Puerto Rico race is concerned but he declined to follow instructions." " Komon was advised to come to camp and plead his case but he refused. We therefore had no choice but to do away with him," he added. He said they consulted on Komon's case on February 26 and dropped him because IAAF required the entries immediately. He said AK followed all the rules to the letter in the case and the action was very much warranted. "We have followed all the rules in book as far as Komon issue is concerned and Komon was not supposed to run in Puerto Rico," he said.

Mutwii defended AK secretary David Okeyo, saying he didn't authorise Komon's participation in Puerto Rico. Speaking separately, Komon accused AK of hypocrisy and said he was ready to forfeit his place in the team. "I don't know why AK are behaving like that. They gave me permission and they have the program for my races. Why are they coining a different story? " he asked. Komon said he was ready to take legal action following AK latest stance. " I'm in shock. What has been said is not true. I followed all the rules and I don't know why they are doing this to me," added Komon.
