Manager Jos Hermens said Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele is two weeks behind in his training but Kenenisa managed to capture another major victory in his first completed race of the season on Sunday by winning the 5,000m. He beat the Kenyan duo Abraham Chebii and Olympian Micah Kogo, finishing in 13:00.76 minutes at the Berlin Golden League meet.
The Oromia native three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele is also a world record-holder at both the 5,000m and 10,000m.
Along with Russia's Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva who won the women's pole vault competition on Sunday, Kenenisa is a favourite to take the $1 Million AF Golden League Jackpot. Sunday's Berlin race was the first stop on the six-meet AF Golden League series which an athlete must win all to take one of the biggest prizes in history.
Last time Kenenisa participated in this series in 2006, he won five of the six races, failing to get the jackpot after losing one at the Oslo competition. This year, if none of the athletes win in each six races, then the ones who end up victorious from five competitions will split $500,000.
