STEPHEN MUZHINGI is a hero that deserves due recognition after he successfully defended his Comrades ultra-Marathon title in Durban last week, the Sports and Recreation Commission has said.
"We would like to sincerely express our gratitude at the level of competency that Muzhingi demonstrated," the Commission said in a statement.
"The success he scored by coming first out of more than 16 000 athletes did the sports industry proud and we say to him and all those behind his success 'keep the good work.'" Muzhingi flew the country's flag high when he won the Comrades Marathon for the second year in a row.
Although he failed to beat his own record of 5 hours 23 minutes 27 seconds, which stands as the second best in the history of the Comrades Marathon, he put up a spirited show in 5 hours 29 minutes 01 seconds.
He won the Comrades Marathon barely two months after he came fourth in the 56km Nedbank Two Oceans Marathon race in April.
